The upshot is that Hong Kong’s market economy is regarded as one of the most advanced in the world. Its gross domestic product is correspondingly high, making Hong Kong one of the few countries in Asia that can stand comparison with the economies of Western states. That prosperity has its roots in Hong Kong’s history<\/strong><\/a> as a former British Crown Colony<\/strong><\/a>. That is how Hong Kong grew into a trading hub between the states of Asia and the Occident. As a result, it is often seen as a place of synthesis between the western and eastern halves of the world. For the people of Hong Kong, for example, Asian and Western traditions and festivals alike carry great weight.<\/p>\n

In terms of population figures<\/strong><\/a>, the Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong, which lies on the southern coast of China, is the third-largest metropolis on the Asian continent. Because its area of 1,103.72 km\u00b2 is comparatively limited, however, the city ranks among the most densely populated places on earth.<\/p>\n

Nor are superlatives confined to the areas set out above. Set at the mouth of the Pearl River, Hong Kong owes to its economic strength<\/strong><\/a> its role as a melting pot of the cultures<\/strong><\/a> and societies of East and West, and that is what gives the metropolis its singular atmosphere. It shows most clearly in the sheer number of religions<\/strong><\/a> and in the merging of the most diverse architectural styles<\/strong><\/a>.
